The Coast to Vines rail trail is a great day or weekend destination on the Fleurieu Peninsula. From the magnificent cliffs of Hallett Cove to the natural beauty of the Onkaparinga River Recreation Park, the trail offers scenic coast to hinterland views. Take in spectacular vineyard vistas and changing landscapes as you make your way through the renowned McLaren Vale wine district. With historic towns such as Old Reynella and Willunga there are plenty of good places to stay and eat.

The trail is fully open from Reynella to Willunga. Sections are open between Marino and Reynella.

Commencing at the car park of suburban Hallett Cove railway station (27 kilometres south of Adelaide) it finishes 34 kilometres later in a rural setting at Willunga. A new “rail side trail” with generous width and excellent sealed surface runs north from Hallett Cove for three kiloemtres to Merino Rocks railway station. This can be seen as an extension to this rail trail and ia a bit undulating but provides great views of the ocean.

While the City of Marion is doing a superb job in constructing their northern section of the trail a gap still remains around Lonsdale Road. The diversion is not sign posted and involves steep and busy roads so we recommend that unless you are really keen it is best to avoid this section and perhaps start south of the new intersection of the Main South Road and Panalatinga Road in Old Reynella (which is not that well signposted either). The former railway easement has been consumed by roadworks at this location (Just north of the site of the former Happy Valley station).

However once across the intersection the rail trail is easy to follow all the way to Willunga. A new one kilometre extension of trail passes behind the Information Centre at McLaren Vale and passes through vineyards to connect with the original rail alignment near the two railway carriages that serve as a café and souvenir shop. This extension alleviates the need to transact along the heavily trafficked main road in McLaren Vale. The trail finishes at a car park adjacent to the former Willunga Railway Station site.

The rail trail is managed by the City of Onkaparinga and the City of Marion, who are seeking funding to further enhance the trail during 2007.
