Visit Opal Field Gems Mine and Museum to experience the romance of opal mining without having to leave the city. Downstairs is a meticulously re-created opal mine of the type found in Coober Pedy. The walls contain real opal and the picture is completed with tools and implements actually used in the mining of opal during the early 1970's. Next to this the visitor finds an Aboriginal art gallery with an extensive range of original paintings, artefacts and didgeridoos. Listen to the haunting sound of the didgeridoo or take advantage of a free lesson. Tapes and videos are also available.
On the ground floor is a unique collection of opalised fossils on display as well as the desert jewels, the world's largest opal specimen. An informative film on opal and opal mining is shown on a large screen. Friendly and helpful staff who are happy to assist with information on our national gemstone in many different languages. A wide range of opals, gifts and souvenirs are available. Tax free sales.
