Saint Ann's Church and Cemetery are situated on the flat Aldinga plains, lying some 45 kilometres from Adelaide on the Main South Road to Cape Jervis. The cemetery is bounded on three sided by vines and olive trees while the church stands on the western boundary.
Several large pine trees provide welcome shade, particularly during the summer months and these are laced with some native trees as well. Three of the boundaries are planted with flowers and shrubs with the cemetery being approached through permapine archways.
Within the cemetery there are footpaths of blue metal stone giving access to all the graves and on these paths are bench seats for the comfort of the visitor who may wish to rest awhile and look around. The views all round the cemetery are really stunning since on two sides there are vines and on the third side the land looks down to olive trees. The southern vista is completed by the foothills some five kilometres away.
The cemetery is still in use and has been catering for the needs of the community since 1868, although first burial was in 1864 and was for a child of 11 months, a girl named Susannah Nelson. Many of the pioneering families are to be found here. Whilst it may be of interest to look at some of the ages of the people buried here because it really shows the harsh life which the early settlers lived with when they settled here. One of the earliest burials in the cemetery, from 1870, is Doctor Knipe, who died at 48 years of age and was the first doctor in the district. It is said that he died of overwork caring for the people of the district. He would travel at any time to a patient both day and night.
