The first meeting of the Incorporated South Australian Society of Model and Experimental Engineers was held in May 1927.
The object of the society is to create and maintain interest in model making, small machine tools, tool making and experimental engineering connected to the models.
Over the years the society has maintained the South Australian Society of Model and Experimental Engineers Park grounds, built a club house, canteen, a boat pond, a boiler house and installed several sets of tracks for the model railways. Members of the Society at regular working bees keep the grounds, lawns, trees and facilities in top condition. The boat pond is the centre of activity for the members who model boats. Steam boats, launches, warships and sailing boats may be seen on public field days. For ground level traction enthusiast a prepared pathway caters to those members also.
Another centre of interest is the boiler house. A vertical boiler provides steam for number of working models of beam engines, mill engines and marine engines as well as several restored industrial engines. Members of the society are only too glad to explain the workings of the models to the public.
Of course the big attraction, especially for children is the railway system. There are two separate systems: one for the smaller scale locomotives and rolling stock running on 127 millimetre (five inch) gauge track. The other system caters for the larger scale locomotives and rolling stock able to operate on either 127 millimetre (five inch) or 184 millimetre (7.25 inch) gauge track. This track was completed in 1982. All the locos are privately owned and were either built by the owners or purchased from other members or model engineers.
