The State Library of South Australia is one of the landmark cultural institutions of South Australia and the world centre for South Australia's documentary heritage. It is located in the heart of the city in the North Terrace Cultural Precinct and open seven days a week.

The library combines the new and the old, with award winning Catherine Helen Spence Wing with its iconic glass foyer flanked by the 19th century splendour and charm of the Mortlock Wing and the Institute Building.

The Library has several exhibition areas showing unique items from State Library collections. The Bradman Collection features the personal memorabilia of Sir Donald Bradman, the most famous cricketer who ever lived. The Treasures Wall - itself a treasure incorporating distinctively South Australian materials from abalone shell to zinc - shows iconic pieces from the collections. The exhibition bays in the historic Mortlock Wing open a window into the history and culture of South Australia, featuring the people, places, issues and events that have contributed to the state's development. The Multimedia Wall shows film and audio items from library collections.

Every weekday at 11am a Library Ambassador takes a tour through a feature of the State Library. On Monday the Mortlock Wing, Tuesday the Bradman Collection, Wednesday the Treasures Wall and the Spence foyer, Thursday Our benefactors and Friday Buildings and architecture. Ambassadors are on hand weekdays between 10am and 4pm in the foyer to guide visitors or take them on a spontaneous tour.

There are regular art exhibitions in the Flinders University City Gallery and the gallery of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts. There is also a lending library on the ground floor run by the City of Adelaide.

In a welcoming and comfortable environment, visitors can keep up-to-date with the latest international newspapers and magazines, read travel guides or find information on any topic. There are computers for email, Internet, word processing and other software, including computer facilities for people with disabilities. There are self-service photocopiers and printers, and a copy centre provides colour copying and imaging services and a fax service.

The library has an excellent general reference collection with information and books on most topics, travel guides, a map collection, newspapers and periodicals and online full text databases. People interested in family history will enjoy seeing the specialist South Australian resources in the Family History area.
