Hotels and Accommodation in Darwin
Darwin is a modern tropical capital city set on a harbour
twice the size of Sydney's.
It is considered Australia's most successful multicultural city - more than 50
nationalities make up Darwin’s 70, 000 population (approximately), including the
area’s traditional owners, the Larrakia Aboriginal people.
As the capital of the Northern Territory and one of the major centres in
northern Australia, Darwin is well served in terms of communications,
transportation, technology and other facilities and resources.
The city has risen, phoenix-like, from the devastation of two vicious cyclones
(in 1897 and 1974) and Japanese bombing during World War II. While several
buildings survived one or more of those onslaughts to remain as reminders of the
city's heritage, the extensive rebuilding required after each catastrophe means
Darwin is aesthetically, a thoroughly modern city.
The influence of so many different cultures makes for fantastic culinary
experiences - whether the food comes from a silver service restaurant, a fish
and chip shop at the wharf or one of the eateries on the boardwalk at swish
Cullen Bay. Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Malay, Indonesian, Chinese, Japanese,
Middle Eastern and modern Australian cuisines are all well represented at
markets held year-round at Parap on Saturdays, Nightcliff and Rapid Creek on
Sundays and at Mindil Beach on Thursday and Sunday nights from April to October.
Darwin offers international standard sporting facilities because recreation
plays a major role in the lives of its residents. An international cricket test
is now held annually at the Marrara Oval and AFL matches are a regular fixture
popular with local footy fans.
