Hunts Well is situated just a few kilometres south of the townsite and is an important part of the state's history. Explorer Charles Cooke Hunt (1833-1868) passed by this area on a number of occasions. His explorations usually started from York, and at approximately a days travel by horse, wells and dams such as those that exist at Tammin can be found along the route he travelled well out to the east of the state.
Most of these wells have fallen into disrepair. However, the well and nearby Tammin tank have been restored by community effort to its original appearance.
Charles Hunt would be pleased to know that today, water is still pumped from the source he discovered so many years ago and helps to supplement the requirements of the town's first class grassed oval.
