Harris Dam was opened in 1990 to supply high quality drinking water to the Great Southern region. Before the dam was built, these communities were served by the Wellington Dam on the Collie River which developed problems of salinity (salt).
A delightful picnic site has been established at the base of the dam wall, with barbeques, tables, sections of boardwalk and toilets. You can walk across the dam wall to view the overflow during winter, and then walk through the parks and gardens to the picnic area.
From Harris Dam, you can also sample the award-winning Bibbulmun Track (1000 kilometre walk trail from Perth hills to Albany) by doing an eight kilometre return (approximately two hours) to a typical Bibbulmun Track shelter and campsite using the excellent CALM Bibbulmun Track Map three (Collie). The area surrounding the dam is a 'water catchment' and a natural conservation area. To protect the quality of the water and the flora and fauna of these areas, visitors must keep to the paths.
All water based activities such as wading, swimming, fishing, marroning and boating, are not permitted. Camping is also prohibited.
