The King River enters Oyster Harbour on its north western end. It stretches over 27 kilometres and is joined by Mill Brook, a large tributary 2.6 kilometres above Upper King Bridge.
The river flows as a narrow winding channel between high sandy banks, through rocky outcrops, low-lying agricultural land with a fringe of sedges and paperbarks, as well as through a delta of saltmarsh and intertidal mudflats. It finally widens and deepends near the Lower Kalgan Bridge.
Small boats can be launched into the river at the upper and lower bridges but the water is very shallow above the lower bridge.
Reserves by the river provide birdwatchers the chance to spot birds such as the Red-capped Parrot, Western Rosella, Scarlet Robin, and both Splendid and Red-winged fairy-wren. King River is popular for swimming, canoeing and fishing. Black Bream being the most common catch with the odd Herring and Skippy.
