The Old Farm Strawberry Hill dates back to the very beginning of European settlement in Western Australia, it was for more than 50 years the home of Captain Sir Richard Spencer and his descendants. Sir Richard after a distinguished naval career, during which he served under Nelson, was appointed Government Resident at Albany in 1833.

The first property in Western Australia to be restored and opened to the public by the national trust of Australia the Old Farm Strawberry Hill with its lovely gardens, has delighted many thousands of visitors over the years.

Set in idyllic surroundings the old farm predates even Perth, the state capital originally the home of Captain Sir Richard Spencer, Lady Spencer and their nine children. The buildings at Strawberry Hill are crammed full of vivid reminders of early settlement and our links with the mother country.

It is largely due to the efforts of Francis Bird and his family that the historically important Strawberry Hill still exists. Purchased by Mr Bird in 1889 as a home for his family, the property was given in memory of the pioneer settlers who had founded it. Modelled on the English estates of the eighteenth century, it is rich in historic association and has great architectural and aesthetic significance.

The drawing room is furnished in Georgian style to represent the years that the Spencer family lived in the house.

The bedroom, furnished in Victorian style, represents the years that Mr Francis Bird and his family lived here, even in 1889 finding the need to restore it to its former charm.

The remainder of the house is furnished in early colonial style representing, in the main, the more comfortable, even resplendent side of life, as it was enjoyed by some of the early residents of Albany. It was here that the first timber was felled, the first sheep were reared, the first crops sown and the
first roads made.

The Old Farm, Strawberry Hill is very widely recognised as an important feature of Western Australia's heritage.
