On the site of the first landing of European settlers in Western Australia, the Western Australian Museum Albany displays information on the natural and social history of Albany and the Great Southern region.
The Residency Building is a landmark in Albany and served as a store for the local convict hiring depot before becoming home to the Government’s Residents, the Resident Magistrates and the home of Albany’s lively social scene. On display are exhibitions on the geological formations of the region. Discover the unique natural biodiversity of flora and fauna that occur only in this part of the world and marvel at the natural landmarks of the Gap and the Stirling Ranges.
The moving stories of Australian solders that left for the war through Albany port are told in the ANZAC Gallery, with displays of photos, letters and artefacts. A special gallery in the Artisan’s building is a tribute to the nurses who dedicated their time and lives to treating the soldiers.
The centrepiece of the Museum is the impressive Eclipse Island lighthouse optic. Originally housed in King George Sound, the optic is a constant reminder of Albany’s history as Western Australia’s first port and of the maritime history of the region
