Yarloop was the centre of Millars Timber and Trading milling operations in the south west of Western Australia. The steam age workshop enjoyed every trade required for the maintenance and building of rolling stock and saw milling operations. Parts were moulded from patterns made in Yarloop and machined throughout the complex. At its peak the Yarloop workshops employed in excess of one hundred people. The shops spanned the steam age and horse drawn eras to modern day diesel tractor and machinery. Part of its fascination was that Millars Timber and Trading owned the town and provided all the support facilities including a hospital not only to Yarloop but mill towns such as Hoffmans Mill, Nanga Brook, Waterous, Mornington, Jarrahdale and to their many towns spread throughout the south west.
At one time Millars Timber and Trading owned the largest private railway in the world and used over one thousand two hundred horses in their operations.
The uniqueness of the complex and the long-term aim to make a working exhibit should ensure the success of this project as an important tourist attraction for the southwest.
Located one and a half kilometres off the Southwest Highway or 18 kilometres off the Bunbury Highway on the railway line between Perth and Bunbury.
