Taste premium wines while gazing at historic buildings and an 1840s vineyard at Langmeil Winery. This winery is steeped in tradition, and the owners are keen that this be preserved and promoted. They are also intent on producing premium Barossa wine, for which they have a huge passion, and to share that passion and pleasure with fellow wine lovers.
Langmeil produces more 30,000 cases of wine a year. Paul Lindner, the winery's prime winemaker, came to the winery with extensive experience from Tarac and Orlando. The winery only processes Barossa fruit for its own label.
The German settlement of Langmeil was established in 1843 in an area adjacent to the North Para River along what is today known as Langmeil Road, Tanunda. The largest land allotment in the settlement then belonged to Christian Auricht. The Langmeil property has been under vines since the early 1840s and the original Auricht estate comprised mixed farming, orchards, butcher, blacksmith, cobbler and of course a vineyard. To accommodate all these activities the Auricht's constructed a number of ironstone buildings, stables and a village well. Many of these features remain and form the backdrop of the Langmeil Winery.
It was not until 1932 that a winery was established on the site by JST (Thedor) Hanisch, a descendant of Christian Auricht. The Hanisch family operated the winery until 1968 after which the complex and surrounding vineyards were sold to Bernkastel Wines who ran the winery until 1988. In February 1996 three friends, Richard Lindner, Chris Bitter and Carl Lindner got together and undertook their first vintage at the winery. Respecting traditions of the past they have restored the old buildings and preserved the heritage of the property.
