Founded in 1970, the Gardens occupy over 52 hectares and feature over 20,000 plants representing approximately 5000 species from around the world. Arid, tropical and temperate plants are arranged in thematic and geographical regions. Attractions include a Tropical Display Dome, a Japanese Garden, a Bonsai House and Fern House. The Australian Plant Communities section of the Gardens occupies over half the total area (27 hectares) and gives a tremendous opportunity to view Australian native plants represented in natural communities.

The Botanic Gardens offer volunteer guided walks daily except Sunday and public holidays and between mid-December and mid-January. The walks last approximately one hour and are at a gentle pace. No bookings are required; just meet the Guides at the Information Centre at 11.00 a.m. or 1.00 p.m. The walks differ each day so you may come as often as you like and visit many different parts of the Gardens. They highlight plants of particular interest in Gardens. The group size for these walks is usually between two and ten people and Guides are happy to personalise your tour where possible and show you things that are of your own particular interest.

Also offered are a full curriculum-based school's education program, a community program of lectures and workshops and self-guided walk trails. With a reference and public lending library (open seven days a week) and the Queensland State Herbarium and a restaurant on site, the Gardens have much to offer. Open daily 8.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. except from April to August when closing time is 5.00 p.m. This free attraction is located seven kilometres from the Central Business District.
