‘Making it Modern’ is a major exhibition of Queensland artist Kenneth Macqueen’s watercolours, highlighting his importance as a key Australian modernist and the most distinctive watercolourist of his generation. Featuring approximately 140 watercolours, the exhibition reveals the important role Kenneth Macqueen played in the formation of a modernist sensibility in Sydney through the 1920s and 1930s. 'Making it Modern’ will explore the concept of the landscape as an important subject in Australian modernist art and the relationship between Macqueen’s farming life and his artistic practice.
Macqueen (1897–1960) settled on a property near Millmerran on Queensland’s Darling Downs in 1922. The open, undulating landscape became the focus of his farming and his art. His watercolours reflect an optimistic vision of the country he worked — his crisp, clear washes evoke its climate and landforms. Equally important are watercolours inspired by family holidays on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts that capture the patterns and pleasures of the seaside.
