Hamilton Hume (1797 -1873) was born at Toongabbie, near Parramatta on19 June, 1797. Hume was a superior Bushman and prominent Australian explorer. He led the first Europeans to the Yass plains in 1821. Hume was a leader in The Hume and Hovell expedition - Lake George to Melbourne in 1824 and occupied the land grant of Yass in 1828. The campsite of earlier years settled by grazier Henry O'Brien in 1829 was purchased by Hume in 1839.
The existing timber dwelling was enlarged to an extensive residence. Hume lived the remainder of his life in Yass. Hume was a leading citizen and a benefactor in early Yass. He had no children and he died at his home, 'Cooma Cottage' on 19 April, 1873.
The original headstone was replaced in 1879 on instructions from his wife Elizabeth. This is located in the Anglican section of the cemetery. Maps are available from the Yass Visitor Information Centre, as are cemetery records.
New signs direct visitors easily to the site where his wife Elizabeth also lays beside him.
