The Kapunda Museum is housed in a magnificent Romanesque style building built in 1866 as the Baptist Church. The museum contains a huge collection covering every facet of Kapunda's history. The attractively presented displays cover two floors in the main building and are complemented by an extensive display of agricultural machinery and historic vehicle collection. It is recognised as one of the finest folk museums in Australia.
The Hawke Gallery displays all aspect of engineering and foundry products from the industries 123 year history and commemorates the engineering company founded in 1857 by former smuggler, Henry Binney Hawke. A massive Hawke cross-compound steam engine holds pride of place.
Bagot's Fortune is a brilliantly designed interpretative display of the history of Australia's first successful mining venture. Under the management of the principal owner, Captain Charles Hervey Bagot, the Kapunda Mine was developed from the wilderness to produce the richest and purest copper ore the world had seen. The display covers all aspects of early mining and the pioneer lifestyle of the miners.
An audio visual presentation in the Theatrette introduces Kapunda's rich history to the visitor.
