The Coffin Bay Pony Preservation Society Incorporated manages Coffin Bay Ponies. These are the only 100 per cent managed herd of wild horses in Australia, representing the heritage of the Eyre Peninsula since European colonisation.
The Coffin Bay Ponies are wild ponies that live at present in the Coffin Bay National Park. When the first white men stepped ashore at Coffin Bay in 1847, they brought with them, the Timor pony ancestors of our now local breed of pony. Along with light draught horses, thoroughbreds and Clydesdale horses, the Timor ponies were to stock the Coffin Bay Run.
Farmed and bred by Henry Hawson and later Mortlock, these sturdy little ponies became invaluable as working and riding ponies, to the local settlers.
When the horse breeding in the area became unviable many of the ponies were left to become wild, and thus the Coffin Bay pony, by adapting and evolving to the environment of the local area, became what they are today. Sturdy, dependable and unique in their adaptability, these little ponies have become a symbol to some of the true South Australian pioneer spirit.
Although, at the moment the Coffin Bay Pony is living in Coffin Bay National Park their future is sometimes uncertain. The pony is part of this unique area, having cemented their place with history and in the hearts of the local community and visitors to the Park alike and securing long term safe tenure for them remains the main objective of the coffin Bay Pony Preservation Society. Ongoing negotiations with the National Parks and Wildlife Department hopefully will lead to a safe, secure future for these unique animals.
