Imagine vast domes of colourful volcanic rock set against pure white salt plains and a deep, blue sky.

Stunning scenery formed by volcanic activity more than 1500 million years ago is around every corner in Gawler Ranges National Park, one of South Australia’s most fascinating wilderness areas in the northern Eyre Peninsula region.

Access the Organ Pipes by four wheel drive and discover a series of dramatic, ochre-red, hexagonal volcanic columns stretching towards the sky. See vibrant wildflowers in spring or camp beneath a starry night sky in the great outdoors.

Don you sunglasses and take in the blindingly white beauty of Lake Gairdner, Australia’s fourth largest salt lake and the site of numerous land-speed record attempts when the lake is dry.

Follow the four-wheel-drive LP Track leading to Pondanna Outstation where you can see original relics of early settlers’ farming machinery or discover amazing geology and pastoral history on a four-wheel drive tour.

Observe some of the parks 140 species of birds or keep your eyes open for Southern Hairy-nosed wombats ambling along.

Bush camping is available, with cabins and camping sites located at nearby Mount Ive Station. Access to Gawler Ranges National Park is via gravel roads from Kimba, Minnipa and Wudinna. Most vehicle tracks are recommended for high clearance or four-wheel vehicles only and driving can be hazardous in wet weather.
