Twin Bays Vineyard and Winery is located just over an hour south of Adelaide between Yankalilla and Normanville, on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and prides itself as a specialist producer of limited release premium wines.
Twin Bays, the winner of an award at the Fleurieu Tourism 2000 Awards, prides itself on excellence and quality. Twin Bays wines have consistently won medals at various National and State Wine Shows.
A small boutique winery, Twin Bays is the first winery in the Yankalilla district, and a pioneer of a new maritime grape region on this uniquely beautiful area of the southern Fleurieu Peninsula. The truly captivating view from the vineyard and winery, which is situated on the slopes above Normanville, is a spectacular panorama formed by rolling hills, valleys and coastal plains with the rugged Rapid Bay and more tranquil Lady Bay as its centre piece. Kangaroo Island is often visible across the gulf waters of St Vincent - the patron saint of winemakers. The winery is aptly named and elegantly represented by the distinctive twin seahorses and trident.
The tasting room can accommodate approximately 30 persons in comfort and the open wood fireplace is an added attraction during the winter months.
Adelaide doctor and specialist Bruno Giorgio with his wife Ginny, gave birth to the venture with plantings in 1989. The original vineyard, two hectares in all, is largely planted to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller areas of Shiraz and Riesling. The cool maritime climate, the good rainfall and deep soils have proved perfect for the vine, giving a long even growing season for building and conserving rich and complex varietal flavours in the grapes.
Hand pruning and harvesting ensures the best results. Bruno Giorgio produces a range of premium varietal wines and a number of interesting and novel wines from grapes grown on the estate, supported by quality, hand picked fruit from selected vineyards on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
The wines are the result of modern and traditional methods. At Twin Bays this is very much a hands-on process from the vine to the bottle. While much of this is achieved on the estate some is contracted out for reasons of economy. The fruit, the environment and the landscape provide the inspiration for creating distinctive elegant and stylish wines.
Cellar door sales: The cellar door sales area, which was opened in 1995, is a delightful blend of old and new, which with it's large picture windows is a pleasant environment in which to sample wines and enjoy the ocean views across the vineyard. In winter the cellar door is warmed by an open fire and by the sunlight streaming through the windows. This area leads to a balcony and gazebo which in summer-time is an ideal spot to relax and soak up the atmosphere while lingering over one of the estate's fine wines.
Twin Bays Winery offers the visitor a selection of gourmet red and white wine vinegar, which is available in locally hand painted bottles, as well as fine Fleurieu Peninsula olive oil, some souvenir items and materials of local interest.
Extended opening hours during school holidays.
