The scenic wonders of this ancient mountain landscape, with its deep gorges and sheltered creeks offer some of the most magnificent scenery anywhere in Australia.
With attractions such as Wilpena Pound - a natural amphitheatre that holds spiritual significance for the local Aboriginal people and has inspired artists for generations - it’s no wonder. Flinders Ranges National Park is one of South Australia’s most popular places to visit.
Whether you’re into adventure, pioneering history, Aboriginal culture or geology spanning millions of years, this park offers something for everyone.
Fly over breathtaking Wilpena Pound, camp next to a creek lined with ancient River Red Gums or look at fossils from the Ediacaran period, 635 to 542 million years ago.
In spring, the area is awash with colour as wildflowers bloom while emus and kangaroos are abundant all year round
Take a scenic drive through the Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges or Arnoona Valley, crossing creeks on scenic dirt roads.
Hike to the top of St Mary’s Peak for stunning views across the plains, sample some of the Heysen Trail, a 1200 kilometre walking trail, or cycle along a section of the 900 kilometre Mawson Trail which finishes in the historic mining town of Blinman.
Resort accommodation and a camp ground with facilities are available at Wilpena Pound while camping sites are dotted throughout the park. Camping permits and entrance fees are required. These can be obtained from Wilpena Visitor Centre or self-registration bays located at the parks many entrances.
