The exhibition at the Melrose Courthouse Museum captures the significance of Goyder’s Line to the fortunes of farmers in the later nineteenth century and highlights the highs and lows of farming in marginal country. Following a settlement boom, the Melrose District suffered severe drought in the 1880s and this, along with the ravages of dust and mice and locust plagues, forced many people from the land. The exhibition at Melrose is located in a building made from stones collected from ruins of farmhouses in the district – a stark reminder of the hazards of dryland farming.
