Experience for yourself the 'city of friendly people' by visiting the Port Pirie Regional Tourism and Arts Centre. Formerly the Port Pirie Railway Station, the Centre has been redeveloped to reflect Port Pirie's heritage with architectural features and artworks interpreting the city's industrial, maritime, transport and agricultural history.
Also a nationally accredited Visitor Information Centre, you will experience a team of enthusiastic volunteers who provide a dynamic information service about the secrets of the Port Pirie Region and the Southern Flinders Ranges.
While here get up close to the 'Longest White Pointer Shark Landed in South Australia', this exhibition chronicles the story of a huge five and half metre shark that drowned after being entangled in a local fisherman's snapper line anchor rope. Highlights are 'Shakka' an exact sized replica created from an original mould taken from the unfortunate shark, the original jaws, pectoral fin, deformed teeth and stomach contents.
Also take an interpretive miniature railway trip on the Pirie Rail Express at the rear of the Centre. The Pirie Rail Express has two locomotives, the steam engine 'Elizabeth' and a diesel engine 'Lady Pirie' that travels a 1.7 kilometre interpretive trip to Broken Hill. Built and operated by a fantastic group of rail enthusiasts you can share in the rail history of Pirie and be assured passengers both young and older have a wonderful journey. To compliment this rail experience is the Model Railway that features a large layout with over 1,000 feet of track and located in one of the old railway platform buildings. The magnificent layout provides a 360-degree view and has also been constructed by a group of volunteer model railway enthusiasts who are happy to share their knowledge. Pirie Rail Express operates on the first and third Sundays of each month from 11.30am to 2.30pm. Pirie Model Railway operates on the first Sunday of each month from 11.30am to 2.30pm.
Also be sure to take a bus tour of the world's largest primary Lead Smelter, Nyrstar Port Pirie. This two-hour journey complete with tour guide and comfortable coach incorporates a DVD presentation and personal onsite tour that provides an understanding of the current smelting process, showcases finished product ready for export and informs about environmental, health and safety initiatives.
Also don't miss the opportunity to taste the flavours of local food produce and grab a few mementos of your visit from the Totally Loco Souvenir and Gift Shop. A visit to this Centre is a must for any visitor wishing to engage in a unique and exciting cultural experience.
