Four wheel driving through the Simpson Desert, with its vivid red sand dunes, shimmering white salt lakes and vast Spinifex grasslands is an adventure you'll never forget.

The Simpson Desert is the largest parallel dunal desert in the world. It covers more than 170 000 square kilometres and crosses the corners of three states - South Australia, Queensland and Northern Territory. In South Australia, the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve and Conservation Park, conserves almost a quarter of this huge area.

The sheer magnitude of this landscape inspires a wide range of emotions in visitors. Some are overwhelmed by the endless undulating dunes stretching from horizon to horizon, while others marvel at the subtle shifts in this ever-changing desert. The feeling of unspoilt wilderness, camaraderie between travellers, and experience of sleeping beneath a sky peppered with stars is another true highlight.

A Desert Parks Pass is required to enter this park. The pass includes a permit, handbook, maps and information about the deserts wonderful array of wildlife. Desert Park Passes are available from the Department for Environment and Heritage office in Port Augusta and agents' right across the country.

Though beautiful, the Simpson Desert is a harsh and unforgiving environment. Travellers must be experienced and well prepared. To find out more, call the Desert Parks Pass Hotline on 1800 816 078, or visit our website.
