The Carnarvon Heritage Precinct comprises the Carnarvon One Mile Jetty, the Carnarvon Tramway and the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage Museum plus many other attractions. All three of these are on the State Register and remaining elements of the port of Carnarvon, which was initially constructed in 1897.
Take a walk down memory lane, through the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage Museum. The cottage was built around 1900 to house the lighthouse keeper and his family and used until the 1970s. The building has now been restored and houses memorabilia from those bygone days.
Visit the Babbage Island Railway Station housing the virtual Shearing Hall of Fame. The Heritage Group in collaboration with The Gascoyne Pastoral and Shearing Museum Incorporated have opened Western Australia’s first Shearing Hall of Fame. Read about fast shearers and big sheds. Learn about the golden days of the Gascoyne shearing industry in the 1950s.
Discover the latest on the search for the HMAS Sydney II/HSK Kormoran, from the famous battle of 1941, off the Gascoyne coast. View one of the lifeboats in which it is believed 57 German survivors came ashore north of Carnarvon.
