The picturesque Avon River flows through the township of Northam offering wonderful picnic settings.
The pedestrian suspension bridge which spans the river, is the longest in Australia and is the perfect vantage point from which to take photographs and view Northam's unique white swan colony.
Northam gets very busy on the first weekend of August every year due to hundreds of canoeists and power boaters starting the gruelling 133 kilometre Avon Descent on the Avon River.
Bell's Rapids is one of the larger rapids on the Avon River. The area is considered to be of high conservation and recreational value. The Rapids are the last great obstacle of the Avon Descent. The main drop is through a shoot in the middle of the river followed by several smaller shoots. The several trees in the river are considered easy obstacles.
The Avon River Festival is held the Friday night before the early Saturday start of the white water classic.
