Barren Grounds Nature Reserve is located on one of the most southerly plateaus of the Sydney Basin. Surrounding the reserve is an escarpment of sandstone approximately 230-250 million years old which forms the bedrock of the reserve. The reserve contains a wide variety of habitats including heath, woodland and tall forest. Excellent bushwalking giving walkers fantastic views of the Illawarra coastline and surrounding countryside.
Barren Grounds is home to a diverse array of wildlife including the threatened Ground Parrot, Eastle Bristlebird and the Long-nosed Potoroo. The reserve has been a protected area for over 40 years and boasts more than 500 species of plants. Enjoy the fantastic walking trails in this beautiful hinterland.
Main site features: Heathland on Hawkesbury sandstone plateau with patches of woodland and rainforest and 450 plus species of plants and 150 plus species of birds. Home of the rare ground parrot and eastern bristlebird. University Research site for plant and animal ecology and fire ecology.
Located approximately 19km past Jamberoo village, this 1750 hectare reserve is an established bird watcher's Mecca. Defined as a 'hanging swamp', this plateau on top of Jamberoo Mountain offers numerous walking trails through its windswept heathland and is the habitat of several endangered species of parrot.

Defined as a `hanging swamp', it offers several walks through the heath land including "Griffiths Trail" an 8km circular walk with a variety of habitats. The area boasts stunning coastal views from rocky outcrops. Cooks Nose Lookout is a shorter 6km return walk with excellent escarpment views over Kangaroo Valley. Picnic facilities are located here.
