Originally established as a rail town the township is a popular spot with locals and visitors. The main beach is also the resting place of the famous shipwreck Amy. Thirroul boasts a great surfing beach which in summer is popular with locals and Sydneysiders and has two Iron Men in the Mercer Brothers. The town has a village like aspect to it and is situated in between Woonona and Austinmeer and is around an hour and a half from Sydney.
