At the very top of the Northern Territory in Arnhem Land, the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park and Cobourg Marine Park is remote and rugged, fringed with magnificent white sand beaches on the Cobourg Peninsula. The national and marine park is perfect for hiking, birdwatching, walking, fishing, boating and photography. Occupying 2,207 square kilometres, Garig Gunak Barlu National Park includes the Cobourg Peninsula and some of the surrounding islands. It extends to the low water mark and includes an extensive inner-tidal area. Waters surrounding the peninsula are incorporated into the Territory's largest marine reserve.
Cobourg Peninsula has many facets of significance. As Aboriginal land, it provides resources and a home for its traditional owners. The cultural centre explores the fascinating history of the area, and the park also contains aspects of particular historical, archaeological and biological importance. Also a wilderness area, the entire park has immense natural and recreational value. There were two early attempts at settling this remote area, Fort Wellington in 1827 and the Victoria Settlement in 1838, but both failed. Don’t miss exploring the eerie ruins of the Victoria Settlement.
