Cape Borda Lightstation is testament to a bygone era of travelling the open seas by sail, and is monument to isolation and hardship.
Perched high above the ocean in a remote corner of Kangaroo Island, Cape Borda Lighstation consists of an unusual square-shaped lighthouse, several historic Lighthouse Keepers cottages and a museum.
Built in 1858, Cape Borda Lighthouse was once used to guide sailing ships arriving off the roaring forties trade winds. Today visitors can discover its fascinating maritime history on a guided tour. For a real blast don't miss the 12.30pm tour for the daily firing of the cannon. Once used to signal danger to ships who ventured too close to shore in fog.
Other highlights include the museum, where you can read the diaries of the early Lighthouse Keepers who wrote of insubordination, including Keepers' refusal to haul supplies. Or the small Lighthouse Keeper's Cemetery at Harvey’s Return, for a somber insight into the hardships faced by the early Lighthouse Keepers’ and their families.
For those wishing to savor the tranquility and rugged beauty of Cape Borda, charming self-contained heritage accommodation is available. Campsites are also located at Harvey's Return.
