The Kangaroo Island Marine Centre is an interpretive centre where aquarium and penguin tours are conducted every evening commencing in our building, which is on the Kingscote Wharf.

Our evening tour combines a foreshore walk in the nearby Fairy penguin colony with a talk about some of our fascinating saltwater aquariums, which contain sea creatures from the famous southern seas off Kangaroo Island. Because of the convergence of currents from the Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean and the sheltered Gulf waters, Kangaroo Island has an exceptionally diverse range of temperate water fish.

The size and shape of our aquariums allows close viewing of the Weedy sea dragons, Big Bellied seahorses, giant cuttles, reef fish, invertebrates and South Australia's popular table fish, the King George whiting, and our experienced guides hand feed some of the fish each night. A brief talk about the evening stars follows in front of our star display and then the guides take you outside, explaining some of the interesting habits of the Fairy penguins while walking through the colony and also pointing out the constellations such as the Southern Cross and Orion. New boardwalks and viewing areas are currently being constructed in all penguin colonies to aid penguin conservation and increase habitat.

During December and January the centre opens at 8.15pm with the first tour at 8.45pm and a second tour at 9.30pm. During other daylight saving months the centre opens at 8pm with the first tours at 8.30pm and a second tour at 9.30pm. During the winter months the centre opens at 7pm with the first tour at 7.30pm and a second tour at 8.30pm. Closed Christmas Day. Each tour lasts approximately one hour and it is recommended that sturdy footwear be worn and bring a jacket as it is often cool in the evenings. Torches are supplied.

A retail area at the front of the building contains souvenirs, Kangaroo Island products and a display and artworks for sale by Jenny Clapson.

Pelican feeding is a popular entertainment for all ages, with John the Pelican Man giving a lively and informative talk about the birds before feeding them at a cost of AUD2.00 each. This happens daily at 5pm on the Kingscote Wharf near the small Fisherman's Jetty behind the Kangaroo Island Marine Centre at the water’s edge.
