The Kangaroo Island Hand-spinners and Weavers made history in May 1972 when they formed the first country branch in South Australia under the guidance of the State Guild. The first sparks of enthusiasm were lit by an Adelaide guild member and fellow islander when she held a one day school at Gosse and several meetings at Parndana. Here the first branch president took up the torch by conducting adult education classes in Hand-spinning and Weaving at the Parndana Area School. The spinners were still in experimental stages but were producing many beautiful colours from wattle bark, onionskins, walnut and passion fruit. They were seeing their gardens through different eyes, wondering what colours they could produce.
We meet on the fourth Monday of each month. Mostly we work with the natural coloured wools from many breeds of sheep. It is also quite interesting to work with natural dyes collected from the local environment. It is interesting to watch the ladies work from the raw state of fleece up to the completed article. Come and see our ladies at their hobby and enjoy a cuppa with us and a friendly chat.
