Canunda National Park

AddressesMillicent
SA

This long strip of coastal dunes and bushland, some 13 kilometres south-west of Millicent stretches from near Carpenter Rocks to Southend. There are four main entry points: Southend, South West of Millicent, Bevilgna and Carpenter Rocks.

Marked tracks through this magnificent wilderness give restricted access to four-wheel drive vehicles, while other areas with spectacular coastal views are accessible for conventional vehicles or cliff-top walkers. There are several picnic areas.

Three lookout boardwalk platforms have been constructed to give cliff-top vantage points.

There are cliff-top walks with magnificent coastal scenery.

A small day visit parking area and picnic facilities are available at the base of the lookout platforms, with two sheltered camp grounds, fireplaces, water and toilets available on the Bevilaqua Ford Track (signposted) from under three kilometres from Southend.

A small car park approximately 40 kilometres from Southend has been installed just prior to the start of the loose sand to enable two-wheel drive vehicle visitors to take a short walk (approximately 300 metres) to the area known as the Khyber Pass, which has interesting sandstone formations.

Getwood beach can be accessed via Canunda Refuse Road from Millicent. Before the beach there is a bush camping area and water with toilet and picnic area.

A short walk on a boardwalk continues to the storm lashed open beach. Try some beach fishing or take a stimulating walk along the beach to search for the flotsam and jetsam thrown up from the Southern Ocean. Coola Outstation Ruins has access signposted to south before Canunda refuse depot. There is two-wheel drive vehicles gravel road to a car park and walking trail, which leads to the Coola Outstation Ruins and Lake Bonney. The walking trail loop (approximately under nine kilometres) passes over a vegetated dune, across a swamp (via a boardwalk), through a tea-tree forest before reaching the ruins. It then continues around the shore of Lake Bonney and back through coastal scrub to the car park.

Friends of Canunda National Park received a National Parks and Wildlife South Australia centenary award for the restoration of the historical ruins. The Millicent based South East Family History Group released a book titled 'Tales of Early Canunda Settlers' for the unveiling of the project in September 1991.

The park vegetation varies greatly from the stunted twisted currant bush, dwarfed correas and coastal, wattle coastal rosemary along the cliff tops and to the reeds and tea trees of the inland swamps. The mobile dunes support sea rocket plants, which is a food supply for the very rare Orange-Bellied Parrot. Other rare/endangered species located in the park are the Swamp Antechinus and Rufous Bristle Bird. Western Gray kangaroos and Echidnas can occasionally be seen roaming the park during the day while at night and at dusk visitors may be lucky enough to catch sight of Wombats grazing and Ring-Tailed Possums feeding in the trees.

For birdwatchers there have been 115 species recorded in the park. These range from the Eastern Yellow Robin to the Whistling Kite and Swamp Harrier. Huge dune drifts change the topography from year to year and may expose relics of Aboriginal campsites, shell middens and artifacts. These areas and their contents are fully protected.

Call at the Rangers Office in Canunda National Park at South end for further information on the tracks/sites to be explored.
