Margaret River has a lot to offer nature and wine lovers
Located roughly three hours South West of Perth, Margaret River and its surrounding region is famous for having over 150 different wineries. It is celebrated for producing great chardonnay and cabernets, and most of the wineries in the area are open to the public and feature wine tastings, restaurants, art galleries and gift shops. Taking one of the many winery and brewery tours offered by the different tour operators in town is also a very popular option.
The coastline near Margaret River faces the Indian Ocean and is a well-known surfer destination for its many breaks known as the Margs. Major surfing competitions are typically held near the mouth of the river, which the town is named after. It was also famously featured in the surf-and-travel documentary, The Endless Summer.
For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, you can charter a boat and venture out into the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean for some whale watching. From May to December, the surrounding waters are usually populated by humpback and southern right whales migrating from Antarctica. Endangered blue whales have also been spotted in the area.
You can also see stingrays and dolphins from the beaches of Hamelin Bay. A remote white sand beach behind the Boranup Karri Forest, it is also surrounded by beautiful limestone cliffs. It is a popular spot for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving.
Much closer to the town of Margaret River is Gnarabup, a favourite among families where little kids can swim in the calm waters. It is also a great spot for fishing, paddle boarding, snorkelling and boating. There are a few hotels and resorts along the coast of the Margaret River area as well, if you want to be closer to the ocean. One can also spend some time just watching the local surfers catch waves at Surfer’s Point.
If you’re heading south of Margaret River, you can visit Leeuwin-Natrualiste National Park, the most popular national park in all of Western Australia. You’ll be passing through Cave Road which will also take you to three popular caves; Lake Cave, Mammoth Cave and Jewel Cave. Throughout the park, you’ll also be in the middle of amazing flora and fauna, including the Karri forest, which are some of the tallest hardwoods in the world and are unique to Western Australia.
Nearby is the town of Augusta and Cape Leeuwin, the most south westerly point on mainland Australia. It is also the starting point of the Cape to Cape track, a 135-kilometre walking trail across coastal scenery and sheltered forests that takes you northwards to Cape Naturaliste. Both capes have their own historic lighthouses as landmarks.
There are also many cultural and heritage sites one can visit in and around the Margaret River area, from the north in the town of Yallingup and southward in Augusta. One can visit museums, aboriginal cultural centres, art galleries, cafes, farmers markets and estates in different parts of the region.
