Cheetham Wetlands, VIC Australia
| Address | Point Cook Homestead Rd, Point Cook Victoria, 3030, Australia | | Enquiries : | Send an enquiry to Cheetham Wetlands |
Cheetham Wetlands consists of lagoons and saltmarsh of varying salinity levels created through the activities of a Saltworks that used to operate in the area. Deliberate creation of a number of relatively shallow ponds provides an environment which attracts many birds who like to feed on vegetation, insects, larvae and other small animals both in the water and on the pond floor. The Wetlands are protected, through international agreements, as important habitats for wildlife. Things to see and do The Tower is a viewing platform for the sensitive and ecologically fragile wetlands. It is 12 metres high, 35 metres long and 24 metres wide. Materials used include steel, stainless steel, copper, and recycled Australian hardwoods, primarily from the Port of Melbourne Authority. The complexity and richness of the environment and of Port Phillip Bay is revealed as the visitor makes the journey along the Tower's walkways. Launched in September 1997 by the Minister for Conservation and Land Management, with participation by members of the Wurundjeri Aboriginal Community, the project reflects three important elements of Victoria's history and development:
* Historical and contemporary Aboriginal presence * The migratory paths of a large number of key bird species, who use the internationally significant Cheetham Wetlands as nesting stations * The development of Australia and Victoria through human migration, forced and voluntary, which has enriched our nation as a tolerant, multicultural and open society This is a sensitive and ecologically fragile wetland - please keep to the path and use the Tower to view the area and its wildlife.
