Straddled a stones throw from Australia's premier tourist & shopping strip, Chapel St, Prahran Market services Melbourne's eclectic mix of the famous, families & coffee culture crowd.
Prahran Market is home of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and The Essential Ingredient. Prahran Market offers every thing for every body. New & unique produce, cooking demonstrations, entertainment, tours, free children's activities and organic produce.
Prahran Market began in 1864 on the corner of Greville and Grattan Streets and moved to its present site in Commercial Road in 1881.
The building was extended in 1891 to accommodate an increasing demand for quality produce and significantly upgraded again in 1923.
On Boxing Day 1950, the fruit and vegetable section of the market was destroyed by fire. But far from stopping trade, a shanty town of sheds was erected to ensure it was business as usual.
A temporary structure remained in place until 1976 when a new building was completed at a cost of $6.5 million.
In recent years the market has undergone further changes including the introduction of a gourmet food hall and the extension of car parking.
Prahran Market has continued to thrive and has become a Mecca for lovers of fine food and produce.
The expertise of the stallholders and their association with the market, which in some cases span generations, are an intrinsic part of the market's character. It remains a true market place and a fine food emporium.
From October 12, Prahran Market will be open every Sunday from 10am-3pm with an exciting selection of mouth watering fresh and gourmet foods from some of your favourite traders and some great new ones.
