Just 132 kilometres north of Perth lies one of Australia's most important heritage sites. Founded by Dom Rosendo Salvado in 1846, New Norcia is still home to a community of ten Benedictine monks.
The architecture, with its strong Spanish flavour, dominates the Australian bush setting. 27 are classified by the National Trust and the town as a whole is registered on the National Estate. The buildings house richly decorated interiors, furnishings and post Renaissance art.
Today, New Norcia is a living expression of 1500 years of monastic hospitality. In keeping with St Benedict's Rule, the Monastery Guesthouse provides simple accommodation and meals for both individuals and groups seeking a quiet retreat and sanctuary. Guests are invited to join the monks for their six daily prayers in the Monastery Chapel and for mass in the Holy Trinity Abbey Church, Monday to Saturday at 0730 and Sundays at 0900.
Whilst staying at New Norcia, visitors are encouraged to take a Guided Town Tour, visit the Museum and Art Gallery, or simply enjoy one of the many walks.
