The Chapman River was discovered in 1839 by Sir George Grey, later Govenor of South Australia. The Chapman River Valley is a delightfully scenic area, being dominated in the south west by the fascinating flat topped Moresby Ranges.
A number of station grazing properties dot this area, among them Mount Erin Station, five kilometres east of Nanson, taken up in about 1860 as the first freehold land. The first Agricultural Research Station was established in 1902 and contributed to Chapman Valley Shire being one of Australia's earliest lupin suppliers.
Nabawa, eight kilometres north of Nanson on the Chapman Valley Road, is the administrative centre. This picturesque little community is a must for visitors during the winter-spring season. The Chapman Valley with its undulating valleys and hills affords some very scenic drives and spectacular panoramas. At Nanson two lovely old stone churches enhance their rural setting.
During the wildflower season July-October, the area between Nanson - Yuna is host to some spectacular displays of pink everlasting and many species of flowering shrubs.
You can join onto the North West Coastal Highway by travelling from Nabawa to Northampton and either returning to Geraldton or continuing to Kalbarri, or travel via Nanson, Nabawa and Yuna to Mullewa, another outstanding wildflower area.
On your visit to the Mid West region a drive through this beautifully peaceful and historic valley is a must.
