From Mount O'Brien (424 metres) you have spectacular views of the country-side. You can see in every direction, and it is the only part of the hill where you can see both Lake Hinds and Lake Ninan, as well as the Agricultural Research Station.

The best months for visiting Mount O'Brien are from May to October. Visitors can see a fantastic patchwork effect across the country with the soil types and the different crops emerging together with the natural vegetation. Later in the year as the crops grow the wonderful sight of so many variations of green is worth seeing with the brilliant display of colour from the golden canola amongst the greens of wheat and barley and the white of the lupins. September is the best month for the magnificent display of wildflowers.

The Mallee fowl was first discovered in the Wongan Hills. There are still Mallee fowl living in the natural scrub areas. These birds are relatively rare and are remarkable in that they build nest mounds filled with vegetation. The warmth of the decaying material and the sun incubates the eggs. When the chicks hatch they must dig their way out of the nest to survive on their own.

Mount O'Brien is named after the O'Brien family who lived in the gap between Mount O'Brien and Mount Matilda and were the first owners of the land which is still privately owned.

Although open fires are prohibited on Mount O'Brien, it is the perfect spot for a picnic, there always seems to be a gentle breeze, flies seem to be non existent and ants are at a minimum. There is plenty of parking space and rubbish bins are provided. Picking of wildflowers is prohibited, as are trail bikes and fire arms.
