The Lavender Federation Trail commences at Sturt Reserve on the banks of the Murray River at Murray Bridge. The trail travels north along the banks of the Murray River, past historic buildings including the Murray River Steamship Company where a number of riverboats are under restoration and then around a wetland area with abundant bird life.

Turning west, five kilometres from the start of the walk the magnificent Rocky Gully Gorge is entered. This spectacular gully boasts steep rugged gorges with rocky outcrops and an abundance of wildlife.

Following the trail and you glimpse exotic animals such as giraffe, bison, zebra and Mongolian wild horses of the Monarto Zoo as you walk along the southern boundary of the park. Where else in the world could you experience the unique sight from a walking trail in complete safety? If you wish you can have a break at this point and drop in for a tour through the 1,000 hectare award winning zoological park.

Continuing west the trail reaches the rim of the Bremner Valley with views to the Mount Lofty Ranges and east to the Murray River before heading north.
Across creeks, past abandoned farmhouses, copper and arsenic mines, over rocky outcrops and ridges with views over the countryside. It is at the top of one of these ridges that a local landowner had built a seat for the benefit of walkers, planted trees around the seat and placed a visitor's book for walkers to fill in.

The trail then makes its way to the summit of Mount Beevor, the most spectacular view of them all. To the north, the bush clad summit of the Wirra Wirra peaks and the Barossa Range break the skyline, to the east, glimpses of the River Murray.

On the horizon to the south, the waters of Lake Alexandrina stand out against the sand hills of the Coorong National Park and the Southern Oceans. To the west, Mount Lofty, Mount Barker, Harrogate and the Bremner Valley complete the scene.

From the summit its a short walk to Diggers Rest, four kilometre north of Harrogate via a spur trail or continue on to Tungkillo 79 kilometres from the start of the trail through some magnificent country.

From Tungkillo, the trail continues in a northerly direction. Initially through grazing country with areas of large rocky outcrops and then gradually the first sightings of vines appear as the trail enters the Barossa Valley to its current destination Springton, 105 kilometres from the start of the trail at Murray Bridge.

A loop trail at Tungkillo allow walkers to begin and end a walk at the same location while using a section of the main trail.

From Springton, the Lavender Federation Trail is planned to pass near Eden Valley, east of Angaston, then on to Truro via Lindsay Park, Stockwell, along the now disused Kapunda to Morgan railway line to Kapunda where the Heysen Trail is crossed. Then it is on to Hamley Bridge, Auburn, and Clare in the mid north of South Australia. Various spur trails are planned to nearby towns along the way.

Maps are of the trail are available from tourist information centres and outdoor shops. Please visit the Lavender Federation Trail website to obtain further details of the trail and locations to obtain maps and a brochure.
