Places to Visit in Rotorua
Rotorua is well-known for its geothermal tourist attractions e.g. geysers, hot thermal springs and bubbling mud pools. Many also come to explore the spectacular vistas that surround the area.
A 20-minute drive from the town centre, and one of the top places to visit in Rotorua, is the Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland where the Lady Knox geyser erupts daily. It also features many colourful hot springs, the famous orange-colored Champagne Pool and amazing scenery over an 18 square kilometre nature park.
A bit closer to the town of Rotorua is the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s youngest geothermal system. Here you can visit large hot springs like the Frying Pan Lake and the Inferno Crater Lake.
Within the town limits of Rotorua, you can also visit the beautiful Whakarewarewa Forest where towering California redwoods surround magnificent walking and mountain bike trails. Entry is completely free of charge and you could easily spend an entire day just walking around the park if you’re a nature lover.
The many lakes and tributary rivers surrounding the Rotorua region make recreational water activities such as fishing, rafting, kayaking, parasailing and jet boat rides a popular activity for locals and tourists alike. Lake Rotorua is a popular fishing spot with its high stocks of brown and rainbow trout. Boat trips can also be taken to Makoia Island in the middle of the lake. Scenic seaplane and helicopter tours are also available.
For a more relaxed, but equally breathtaking view of Lake Rotorua, don’t forget to try the Skyline Rotorua. Located on the side of Mount Ngongotaha in the northwest part of town, you can ride nearly 2,000 feet to the peak in one of the gondolas. People looking for an adrenaline rush can also try one of the famous luge tracks. Once at the top you can also enjoy a buffet lunch or dinner at the Cableway Restaurant.
Many attractions in Rotorua also highlight the area’s history and the Maori culture who inhabited the region 600 years ago. Right in the heart of the town is the Tamaki Maori Village where ceremonial rituals and old Maori traditions are recreated through cultural performances and various other activities. You’ll learn a lot about ancient arts and customs such as haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and warrior training, among many others.
Just a short walk away is the small, but award winning Rotorua Museum of Art and History which was opened in 1969. It is housed in the spa town’s historic Bath House building, built in 1908, and features collections of fine art, photography, social history and relics from the Maori culture. The museum overlooks the Rotorua public park known as Government Gardens. And right next door is the historical bath house from the late 1800s now known as the Polynesian Spa, which many claim to have therapeutic benefits.
Rotorua is also the gateway for people travelling to the North Island’s best ski fields on Mt. Ruapehu, since it has its own international airport. And the town is no stranger to providing world-class hospitality to anyone who visits. There are over 140 different restaurants in the area, which can satisfy any craving you may have. Right at the heart of the town centre, Rotorua has its own Eat Street which is packed with restaurants, cafes and bars.
