The erection for the Australian Standing Stones in Glen Innes has been
undertaken in recognition of the contribution made by peoples with Celtic
origin in Australia, over the last 200 years. The site is to serve as a
cultural gathering place for people from the Celtic Communities; the Irish,
Welsh, Cornish, Scottish, Manx and Bretons. As such, this array has major
historic significance.

Until now, there has been no single place anywhere in the world that is
designated for the purpose of uniting all branches of Celtic Peoples.

Further to this, the focus for the future is towards the accurate recording
and collating of the festivals ans celebrations that mark the calendar of the
Celtic communities. It is also designed to enable people, particularly the
young, to learn and understand their Celtic heritage.

Made up of 38 giant granite monoliths, the Australian Standing Stones consists of a circle of 24 stones (representing the 24 hours of the day), together with three central stones, four cardinal stones marking true north, east, south and west, and another seven stones in solar alignments. This design is not a copy of any other stone circle. It is uniquely Australian, and includes features not found anywhere else.

For the Celtic Events in Glen Innes see 'Australian Celtic Festival', which
gives details of the festival held in May every year.

Crofter's Cottage
On the site of the Standing Stones is a quaint 'Crofter's Cottage' which
enhances this truly Celtic scene. Celtic jewellery, stationery, handicrafts, clothing and giftware can all be
purchased here. Light meals, home baked Celtic teas/coffees, hearty soups, Celtic
confectionary, cold drinks and ice creams are offered with a generous dash of
old-fashioned hospitality. For more details telephone (02) 67 32 5668.
