The Lismore region has one of the highest populations of koalas in
NSW, with an estimated 3500. But the native creature is threatened
by many things including disease, loss of environment, bushfires,
domestic animals and development.
The Lismore Friends of the Koala group have cared for hundreds of
koalas and have raised money to set up a Koala Hospital and tree
nursery.
Local vets donate their time to care for the sick and injured koalas.
The koalas are placed in the nursery temporarily before being released back to
their natural environment and visitors are welcome to wander through
the nursery and see the koalas. If volunteers are on hand, they will be more
than happy to discuss koalas and how people can help save them.
The Lismore Visitor Information Centre on (02) 6622 0122 also has
an array of information on koalas. Tours by arrangement.
