Mutawintji is special place; you can feel it when you’re there. You may not be able to quite put your finger on what it is, but the beauty and tranquillity of this place will remain with you long after you have left.

Mutawintji has been a significant place in the lives of local Aboriginal people for a long time. In years gone by it served as a place for large gatherings where business, social and cultural interests were furthered. In 1998, after a long struggle by the traditional owners, their land was returned to them. It is now held by the Mutawintji Local Aboriginal Land Council and a Board of Management oversees the operation of the park.

There are many ways to experience the park:

* View some of the Aboriginal heritage of Mutawintji and hear how the features of the landscape in and around Mutawintji were created on a guided tour of Mutawintji Historic Site with a traditional owner;

* Immerse yourself in the landscape on one of the park’s walks; whether you prefer a short easy stroll or an overnight hike there are ample opportunities here;

* Camp under the stars at the Homestead Creek Campground, where you can re-invigorate yourself with a shower after a hard day exploring;

* Be inspired by amazing gorges, ephemeral creeks and waterholes; Mutawintji is one of the few reliable sources of water in the area which has made it attractive to both people and animals;

* Sit and relax at one of the sheltered picnic areas in the park;

* Enjoy the prolific birdlife of the park; more than 150 species have been recorded including the rare Hall’s babbler;

* Learn about the geology of the area; the area is considered to be of major palaeontologic significance.
