Follow in the footsteps of the prehistoric creatures that once roamed this ancient land. Australia's Dinosaur Trail encompasses the towns of Richmond, Hughenden and Winton which all have their own unique dinosaur stories to tell.
In Richmond, visit Kronosaurus Korner Fossil Centre which is primarily dedicated to displaying marine reptiles. However, Kronosaurus Korner is also home to Australia's best preserved dinosaur skeleton. After visiting Kronosaurus Korner you may like to try your hand at finding your very own fossil. Finds may include shark teeth, fish bones, belemnites and various shells. Moon rocks are unique limestone creations which vary in size from a golf ball to many tonnes. Moon rocks can be viewed throughout the parks and gardens in Richmond.
North of Hughenden is the next stop at the Porcupine Gorge National Park. See 500 million years of layers of rock formations in this deep gorge system, known as the Australia's 'Little Grand Canyon'. Next up is the Flinders Discovery Centre in Hughenden. Meet Hughie a skeletal Muttaburrasaurus, surrounded by a large fossil and gem display. Navigate the Basalt Byways for a scenic drive plotted through rugged basalt countryside. Then drive along the edge of the once prehistoric sea with an excellent lookout boasting panoramic views.
Onto Winton to visit Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways which is set in an amazing landscape of red earth, Spinifex and jump-up country. Come and see the dinosaur footprints which inspired the dinosaur stampede in Stephen Spielberg's movie "Jurassic Park". The Corfield and Fitzmaurice Building was once a General Store. This heritage listed building is now home to the Dinosaur Diorama, a display of the recovered bones of Elliot and other fossils.
