Carnac Island encompasses approximately 19 hectares and is located 10 kilometres south west of Fremantle. It was once a whaling station, but is now a fully protected nature reserve that provides a haven for a multitude of wildlife.
The "A Class" nature reserve of Carnac Island is an important habitat of the Australian Sea-Lion, one of the world's rarest seal species. The island is also known as an important breeding island for many seabirds including a variety of Tern species, the Little Penguin and many other local seabird species. A small, isolated population of Tiger snakes (one of the world's deadliest snakes) make Carnac Island their home and are a valuable source of snake venom in reptile research. A qualified bioligist is on location to guide visitors around the nature reserve. Cruises depart regularly from Perth and Fremantle.
