The Guildford Mechanics Institute was formed in 1862 by the gentry of the Swan district as a society with the object of improving the general education of local tradesmen.

Construction of the Hall commenced in 1865. It was the first public hall built in the Swan district, and was used for public meetings, lectures and concerts and housed a lending library.
