Neerabup National Park is located about 27 kilometres north of Perth along the western side of Wanneroo Road. It is a long and narrow stretch of bushland covering only about 12 kilometres and 1,069 hectares.
The park has no formal facilities. Access is by foot only, there are no roads or car parks. With no prominent landscape features one would be inclined to think there was nothing to see. On the contrary Neerabup National Park provides an excellent setting for quiet recreation. In spring the birds clamour to the region and a magnificent display of wildflowers starts to bloom.
Limestone caprock covers much of the landscape and supports vegetation ranging from jarrah and tuart woodlands, open banksia woodlands, hakea and dryandra heathlands, and a diverse understorey of kangaroo paws, scrub sheoak, one-sided bottle brush, native buttercups, native wisteria, dodder, old man's beard and prickly moses.
Early morning or late afternoon walks will allow the visitor to experience the park's native animals in their natural habitat. Common fauna includes the western grey kangaroo, emus, the endangered Carnaby's black cockatoo, echidnas, brushtail possums and brush wallabies.
The park is valuable in providing gentle recreational activities such as walking, photography, birdwatching, and nature study.
The park follows an old stock route, which in turn follows part of an ancient Aboriginal migration route between Lake Joondalup, in the Yellagonga Regional Park, and Loch McNess, in Yanchep National Park. The route also forms the basis for the 28 kilometre Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail, developed in 1988 as one of a network of heritage trails marking the Australian bicentenary.
Neerabup National Park is definitely worth a look for any nature lover. Don't miss it!
