St George's Cathedral and the Cathedral Precinct is the most significant heritage site in the City of Perth.
The buildings stand proud in the heart of the 'establishment district' of the City encompassing Council House, the Town Hall, the Treasury Buildings, Supreme Court and Government House.
The original St George's Church was opened in 1845. On the 11th of January 1856 Letters Patent were issued by Queen Victoria establishing St George's as a cathedral. In consequence, the town of Perth was granted the status of a City.
In 1880, work began on the second St George's Cathedral which was completed in 1888. For over 120 years this Cathedral Precinct and the Cathedral has been integral to the life of Perth.
St George's Cathedral and its associated heritage buildings are:
- A place of worship and spiritual care. - An irreplaceable group of heritage buildings. - A centre for State and community services of celebrating and mourning. - The home of an innovative Education and Theological Institute. - A centre of musical and artistic excellence. - The heritage heart of the City of Perth.
The Cathedral is open to visitors every day. The service times are available on the website www.perthcathedral.org.
All are welcome to share in the wonderful testament to the history of our city and a place of worship, reflection, celebration and peace.
