Once the state's only botanical gardens, Stirling Gardens offer beautiful shade, ornamental trees, well-kept lawns and gardens, including many specimens of imported plants and trees, just a few paces from Perth's major thoroughfare, St Georges Terrace.
A modern memorial to the state's progress - the Ore Obelisk, unveiled in July, 1971 - consists of a 45 foot oil drill pipe on which have been threaded fifteen ores - each representing the natural wealth of ore, which has made this state one of the world's foremost producers of minerals.
It nestles amongst trees and lawns, inferring that mining and conservation go hand in hand. Very close to the spot where the City was founded in 1829, it is a monument to the energy of generations of Perth people.
